Sweeney Todd - Review

Sweeney Todd

OK, what you need to do for this flick is imagine Oliver Twist, Edward Scissorhands, and a little bit of Hannibal and put them through a huge meat grinder and then bake them into a pie and name it Sweeney Todd.

I started to watch this movie already knowing that it was a musical, and there would be singing. I didn’t realize that the majority of it would be though. So as soon as Johnny Depp started singing, I immediately started feeling discouraged and felt like I might end up turning it off because I really am not into musicals, but I decided to give it a chance and was somewhat glad I did.

Fifteen years ago, Benjamin Barker (Johnny Depp) was a happy young barber with a lovely wife and baby daughter; then, everything changed: A nasty judge (Alan Rickman) sent him to prison and took the wife and baby for his own. Now Barker’s back in London, going by the name Sweeney Todd, and he’s ready for revenge against the judge, his Beadle, and anyone else who crosses him. He is joined by a partner-in-crime, Mrs. Lovett (Helen Bodham Carter) who helps him dispose of his victims by baking them in meat pies.

If you can get past the singing, and follow along with the storyline of this Musical Thriller, chances are you will end up liking it a little as I did in the end.

I really started enjoying it as soon as Sweeney slashed his first victim. It was unexpected and actually quite brutal, and the following victims ended up in even more brutal life ending moments.

Along with the bloody killing, and singing, there is actually some morbid comedy that you need to catch as it is very subtle.

Because this is a musical, it does not mean that it is a family show, it’s far from it. It gets very violent and brutally gory at times and might even make the weak stomached grown up a little bit queasy.

If you the type that just downright hates musicals and would never give them the light of day, then this one is not for you. If you like violence and think you might be able to tolerate a lot of singing, then you’ll probably enjoy this one. If you enjoy musicals and gore then yup, you’ll like it. And if you hate gore, well…you get the picture.

I actually enjoyed this one despite the singing, I was actually impressed that Johnny Depp could actually sing. Oh yes, he really does and there isn’t any voice over going on here.

I’m recommending this one, but whether or not that you’ll like it all depends on you liking musicals or not. So it’s basically down to whatever you can tolerate really.
