Cloverfield

In my opinion, Cloverfield was more hype than anything. The whole Blair Witch thing could have been better off left out and had some real directing done and this movie would have been a whole lot better.

The first few minutes of the movie that gets you acquainted with the individual characters that take the main roles of the movie could have been cut shorter too. The whole party scene got a bit boring really fast.

Once the action began you were first introduced to the memories of 9/11. The whole scene with the buildings falling down and the people running into the shops to get out of the way of the rushing dust clouds so reminded me of that dreaded day of 9/11. The aftermath out on the streets with the dark lighting and the office papers flying around and people covered in ash were so familiar to that day.

Revolves around a monster attack in New York as told from the point of view of a small group of people.

There was a lot of running around and you end up finding yourself getting frustrated with the camera angles and shots. If it weren’t for the funny comments coming from the guy that was recording the whole thing this would have been something that would seem so unreal and pointless. Even though the whole 1st person perspective thing was a bad idea in my opinion.

I put together a little clip and I have to admit it was difficult finding something to put in it because it was either show a lot of running around which is what the entire movie consists of, or show the scenes with the monster and ruin the whole thing for everybody. Even though there are probably images of the monster all over the internet by now, I decided not to show the entire monster. You will catch bits and pieces of it, but not the whole thing. So be forewarned, this is a bit of a spoiler.

This movie actually reminded me of a couple of movies like Blair Witch, The Mist, and 9/11 (The one with Nicolas Cage). So if you liked them ones, you’ll probably follow along with this one too.

There are a few unanswered questions that arise after watching the movie. What the hell was it? Where did it come from? And what happened to everybody? If they really needed to do the whole Blair Witch thing, they should have at least opened with some real directed movie quality stuff explaining what the hell is going on, and at the end they could have went on to let the audience know what happened after the video camera ended. But instead they left you hanging like they did in Blair Witch.

I’m on the fence with this one. It was good, but I was expecting more. The need to see what the monster looked like was my only drive to seeing this movie, and after seeing it, I was not really satisfied with the movie. I was just plain expecting more.

I really didn’t like the whole first person view through the video camera theme, this would have been a whole lot better if it was directed in a real movie type way.

It’s alright for a DVD rental folks.

Thanks for the movie review. I’ll have to check out this movie. Perhaps it’s one to add to our Netflix queue.

Cloverfield is the type of movie that is meant to be seen on the big screen. It’s a monster movie, the monster is supposed to be huge and bigger than life. You can’t get that effect on a TV.

I enjoyed the first person POV and it made the film different and more enjoyable. It made it more realistic (realistic for a monster movie at least) and more chaotic. I have some small problems with the film, but I enjoyed it a lot.
